"Cedar Ward horrendous nursing by a lot of nurses"

About: Barnet Hospital / General surgery

My dear friend had the best of treatment the NHS could give in A&E, Willow Ward and especially ICU was top care plus an excellent Surgeon. Unfortunately, I cannot day the same about Cedar Ward at all. There were some good nurses but there was not enough of good ones on that Ward.

Consultants prescribed medication ie creams to be administered as he had been prescribed but myself and along with her family would have to constantly tell them it hadn’t been done...reply oh I don’t do that needs a different nurse to do it...why put nurses on a surgical ward if they cannot carry out and administer what Surgeons want their patients to have so that they can recover from major surgery. A nurse washing my friend, knocked off the dressing whilst washing her, said oh I need to get a new dressing, never returned with a dressing, she had an infection so that needed to be kept sterile, don’t think some nurses know that at all. My friend was taken out into main hospital for X-rays etc with a wound that had had to have stitches cut by surgeon due to the infection. I arrived to visit her and found her upset as nobody was listening to her about the dressing or the creams. I had to AGAIN find a nurse who was willing to see to my friend. Her infection got worse and needed a bag to drain the infection into. You see nurses standing around chatting looking at one another’s phones ie photos and laughing. Sometimes you saw nurses sitting at the nurses station on the Ward using their mobile phones. My friend thankfully has a good family and myself plus she’s on the ball unlike some on that Ward with dementia, they are unaware of what should be happening to them.

I have always praised Barnet hospital but I would hate for myself or a member of my family or another friend to be admitted onto such an awful Ward. Nurses, I always believe, took up that profession because they want to help and care for people who are ill, injured or had surgery and have the desire to help patients in times of need especially the most vulnerable which a lot of patients were on that Ward. I certainly believe that Cedar Ward needs to be investigated on the nursing side. Although there were a few as already mentioned that took there profession seriously and had the heart to care for the less vulnerable of patients but they were the ones run off their feet trying to carry the lazy uncaring nurses.

I hope the Trust reads this review and seriously makes nursing changes for the well being of sick patients.

I know NHS is struggling but it shouldn’t affect the care and duty that is given to patients. If one Ward can be so good, why can’t Cedar Ward be the same!!!!

Dear Maggie

Thank you for sharing the experience of you and your friend, I have been in touch with the ward sister from Cedar Ward and she is terribly sorry for the care you describe and asks you pass the apology to your friend.

The sister is taking it to a ward meeting so all staff can discuss what went wrong for your friend.

Kind Regards

Richard
