"Surely vulnerable people must be given allowances"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire

(as a carer),

I would like to start by saying I have nothing but praise for the staff and the care my mother has been given by the faraday medical practice. A system is in place where if you fail to attend an appointment on 3 occasions you will be removed from their register. I realise that this is necessary but what about the vulnerable patient. My mother is in her 80s and has been with the practice all her life. She has never missed an appointment but now in her failing years she was sent a letter informing her she had missed 2 appointments and would be removed if she did not attend another appointment. The first appointment missed she was in hospital, the second she had marked the wrong time down but went to the appointment late. Surely vulnerable people must be given allowances. My mother was in tears over the bank holiday weekend worrying she would not have a gp to attend to her.

The three missed appointments has no time scale surely it should be within a year period to allow people to redeem themselves. Where is the compassion for people especially the vulnerable.

There may be people out there through no fault of their own may become ill receiving this letter I have no doubt that my mother would have been one of these people if she did not have family looking out for her. I am absolutely disgusted at the lack of thought for theses vulnerable people

Dear jane110,

I'm sorry I'm unable to comment on the guidelines the Practice have regarding attendance; GPs are independent contractors and aren't registered to use the Care Opinion System to reply to you directly and they are responsible for looking into and to responding to any concerns that people have regarding the services they provide.

I can only apologise for the distress and worry that the recent correspondence from the Practice has caused your mother.

I'd recommend you contact the Practice Manager in the first instance to discuss your mother's situation; in the meantime I'll ask my colleagues in the Patient Affairs team to share your feedback with the Practice.

Kind regards

Rick
