"Smokers at the main entrance"

About: Pilgrim Hospital

I cannot understand why the hospital still has not stopped people smoking outside the main entrance where they clearly have signs that says smoking is prohibited, my partner has chronic asthma and has 2 walkthrough plumes of smoke to get to the main reception, this has been going on for years , your security cannot stop it, why are you letting me smokers get away with it, if I approach them myself I get bombarded with loads of verbal abuse from ignorant people who blatantly smoke on front of a no smoking signs smoking cigarettes, it's not my job to enforce it, it's yours

To enable us to provide a safe environment that promotes health and reduces harm from exposure to second-hand smoke, discussions around turning all of our sites completely Smokefree are taking place throughout 2019. This means that smoking may not be permitted on any of our sites including all buildings, grounds and vehicles. It may also include removing all designated smoking areas.

Any decision to go Smokefree would also be in line with The Health Act (2006) and The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) 2013 guidelines which state that all hospital sites should ideally be 100% Smokefree.

To help us understand if turning ULHT completely Smokefree is appropriate, we’re undergoing a four-month consultation and engagement exercise with our patients, public and staff.

The consultation will finish at the end of July, with all comments and feedback analysed and considered prior to any new policy implementation.

The challenges around becoming Smokefree are recognised. We wish to consult with the public in particular (but also have a dialogue with staff) around the implications of a new policy and the way in which we implement.

We’re asking a series of questions as part of this process, to help us mitigate concerns and manage the process in the most effective way for everyone involved:

We are sorry for the experience you detailed but thank you for taking time to raise this with us.
