"I finally felt like someone understood me"

About: University Hospital Ayr / General Medicine

(as the patient),

I became unwell in May 2018 and thanks to the medication my diabetes became wildly out of control. I was so upset as I had my type two diabetes well controlled and that had taken a long time. Having spent six weeks in Ayr hospital I was also sick of seeing nurses and NHS staff sorry but as you can imagine it’s a chore having to attend regular appointments.

I met the diabetic team at Ayr in December and began insulin to try to get my blood sugar under control. Having suffered a stroke and a neurological condition I found the new information bombarding. At times I just wanted to go home.

Then I went one day and saw dietician Ruth. I finally felt like someone understood me. I was not feeling judged and she made me feel at ease that the confusion was common. She explained everything about my diet and the impact on my blood sugar and finally I began to understand. She’s given me so many options that finally we have a system that works. I’ve had to ask that I see only Ruth and I feel she understands me and my special needs completely. Nothing is too much trouble and she takes the time to listen. I feel safe knowing that she has my condition getting better. I want to thank her for all she does I even look forward to my visits to see her with my wife. She looks after us both and has even had to listen to my wife when she struggled with all that has happened to me. A true star who goes above and beyond thank you

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.
