"Blood test department"

About: St Mary's Hospital (HQ) / Clinical haematology

It is generally hard to take my blood. My vein seem to be hidden deep in my arms. They aren’t even visible and the best of times. I get into my bay when called and say hello to the gentleman in the chair. I get no response. It’s 1pm, so I put it down to hunger! He then prints my labels and get the 8 bottles ready to take my blood. I clear my throat and say, ‘I know this is field of expertise but I’m just letting you know it’s really hard to take blood’. He spins in the chair and wraps the most uncomfortable purple plastic strap around my upper arm and begins to slap away. He then runs and pull my arm into the downward straight position which can’t go any straighter then it is. He get the needle and puts it into my left arm which doesn’t get any vein. He then begins to move it about and it becomes very painful.

Whilst the pain is so bad I begin to ask him to stop, to which he says, ‘oh, it’s really hard to take you blood’!

You think?!? He then say let’s look at you right arm. He slaps it hard and then gets another needle. I ask him if he sees or feels a vein? He says he thinks so and is going to try. I tell him, if he isn’t sure please don’t put another needle in my arm. He says you’ll have to wait for someone else. To which I reply, that’s fine. I think some people who work in hospitals forget that the people who they are dealing with are sick, they need to be treated like an individual and on some occasions need a different approach. In the end I was pricked 4 times! The plaster the staff member gave me bought me out into a rash. This is not acceptable treatment. I feel sorry for any elderly person who has the misfortune to get him in the future.
