I was admitted to admissions 1 at the Victoria hospital kirkcaldy with breathing problems from the out of hours gp one Sunday.
This was my first ever experience as a patient. Started off good. Excellent care in admissions and when moved to ward 51 by tea time they were great too and on top of my care being treated with the nebulizer inhalers and steroids. I got seen by the gp who informed me to stay another night I was a little apprehensive however staff reasured me.
Around 9pm I got told I would be moving to ward 13 still at the Victoria hospital kirkcaldy I wasnt too keen as it was late I was tired and I hadn't slept with being ill. However I was reasured id get a side room and theyd be looking to discharge me in the morning all going well. I got moved to ward 13 at around 22: 45
when I arrived the nurse took my blood pressure etc within 15min and I never seen her again till 6. 50am. On my arrival my room was very cold I complained to staff but nothing happened as tea and toast was getting dished out. Then wanting to settle into bed I noticed the big light in the bedroom wouldnt switch off after complaining 3x I got told by another nurse and care staff they havent worked this floor and don't know where anything was! That was very reassuring NOT! would they even know what to do or even find the equipment it scared me. Also being told to look for a switch myself after telling them it doesnt work wasnt the answer I was looking for they should be reasuring me and fixing the problem not me fixing their problems!
I think its a disgrace and a complete joke. 2 hrs passed with no communication from staff the lights eventually went out just after 1am still not good enough tho! Causing me more stress and breathing difficulties. Staff never entered my room once over night.
The nightshift nurse said they heard me coughing really badly over night and that I must be sore. why they didnt think to check on me over night hearing my cough was really bad! This has caused me great anxiety and unnecessary stress which now might delay my discharge as this has had an effect on my breathing. Nightshift gave me no reasurance and came across like they didnt care very disappointing for my first experience as a patient. I do not think that this ward is fit for purpose why would you move someone with a viral and respiratory problems to a cold building/room with no competent staff that care or know where anything is and openly admitted that to me causing me more stress and discomfort.
If this delays me getting home causing me more time of work and hindering my recovery. This should not be happening and im deeply upset and is causing me major stress at the moment as I write this waitin on the gp to see if this move has caused me more problems in the long run. I think that something needs done as I feel that this is totally unacceptable!
