I was called last minute to go in for surgery on a waiting times list. Had my pre op assessment in early April - the nurses there were amazing and communication skills excellent; giving all the necessary info to ensure a smooth recovery.
I then went in to the day surgery unit later that week for wisdom teeth extraction under general anaesthetic. Pre op - The nurses, anaesthetists and surgeon were so very thorough with their pre and post operative information with not only me, but all 3 of the other ladies in the bay with me. Through the morning I was made to feel welcome, safe and was kept well informed in regards to my position on the list. Being a nurse myself, and being the first time on the receiving end of care - this all helped massively. Theatre - I got wheeled through to theatre on the trolley and took into reception where all my information was checked again. The nurses Brian and Amanda were in the anaesthetic room with me and Amanda put my cannula in. They both chatted until the anaesthetist came and popped me off to sleep. This helped me feel at ease and I knew I was in safe hands. Recovery - I woke in recovery and felt really disorientated, not sure of where I was. The nurse, Ausra, couldn’t have been any nicer. She spoke softly to me and gently reminded me where I was and that I was safe. She stroked my hair as well and although a small act of kindness I really felt cared for and relaxed pretty quickly. Post op - back in day surgery the nurses were amazing. Aisha and (I think) julie - ensured all my needs were met. They gave me painkillers and allowed me to eat yoghurt, drink plenty water and gave me a heads up on when I could get home. Home - I’m now recovering at home with no complications thanks to Mr Graham’s (surgeons) skills and the anaesthetists also. (Sorry can’t remember everyone’s names but appreciate you all)I worked in a day surgery unit in a different health board and so it was daunting being the patient at first. A special thanks to Aisha, Julie, Brian, Amanda and Ausra for their attentiveness, care and compassion for what they do. It’s so lovely to have such a positive experience.
"Excellent care from start to finish"
