"Female Radiographer refused"

About: Homerton University Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

I went for a 12 week scan and when I arrived I noticed posters stating that there may be males or female radiographers doing the scan. So when I booked in I asked for a female as this was my preference and I believed that patients have and should have a choice in their care. I was told that there was only a male available and nothing could be done. When I was called my partner asked again can someone call a female and we were refused. This was the only time off we could arrange but they wanted us to come back in another time for another appointment where they couldn't guarantee a female again! I had my daughter 4 years ago and didn't have any problem like this. My partner then had to ask to see the manager and after talking to them for at least 30 minutes was able to find a female radiographer! The lady was about to go for her lunch break so rushed the whole scan and I felt a burden but was grateful that I was seen. But it shouldn't have taken so much fuss just to help us. The hospital should consider that some women are not comfortable with men performing the scan. Also before the scan I wasn't informed that you had to pay to have a picture of the scan and they just expect you to have the correct change.
