"Not the standard you expect"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I was taken into the Emergency Department at University Hospital Wishaw with neutropenic sepsis, the staff I encountered were very professional and caring. Care was very efficient and I received all my treatment with the hour. I was then transferred to the Emergency Care Unit, staff were again very caring and professional.

However when getting into bed I noticed that there was blood all over the floor and bedrails. I informed nursing staff and this was resolved quickly. This is not the standard you expect. I was supposed to get continuous IV fluids overnight which I didn’t get and also only had one set of observations on admission until the next morning about 9 o’clock.

Overall my experience was ok but could have been better if above had been carried out.

Dear LGstag,

Thank you for taking the time for posting your experience of your care within the ED and ECU and glad that you found the staff caring.

However I would apologise that the standard of cleanliness of the environment was not what we would expect and raises concerns with me but glad this was resolved quickly.

In response to you not receiving intravenous fluids overnight or having clinical observations recorded overnight this is also an area of your care that if there was an omission that we should learn from. It would be helpful if you could provide me with additional information so that we may investigate these areas of care that you feel have been compromised and also to give you a targeted response.

Please contact the patient affairs manager by e mail at yvonne.ross@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk.

I hope this finds you feeling better.

Best wishes

Andy

Dear LGstag,

I have spoke with Claire Mitchell, Senior Nurse for Infection Prevention and Control. She has provided me with the following statement to provide you with the assurance that this has been escalated to IP & C team.

''Thank you for bringing this situation to our attention. The Infection Prevention and Control guidance is that patient equipment and the environment is cleaned as soon as contamination occurs. This has, on this occasion, not happened and is not the standard set by NHS Lanarkshire. I have spoken to the staff in ECU to reinforce the standard required in line with the National Infection Prevention & Control Manual''

I would like to thank you for contacting the patient affairs manager and I have commenced and investigation into the concerns that you have raised. Once again I would like to apologise for the sub- optimal care that you have experienced and will provide you with a targeted response through the formal complaints process.

I hope that you are feeling better.

Best wishes

Andy
