"Full knee replacement"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / General surgery Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I went for my pre op at the beginning of March 2019 All went very well, I was asked if I would be interested in a cancellation, I said yes with 24 hours notice. I came home from work in late March and realised I had a text and it was from the NHS Forth Valley asking I call them ASAP.

I duly called and was greeted with hello how would you like your knee operation tomorrow, which I quickly replied yes please. I was in Forth Valley at 11. 45 the next day went to the relevant ward where I had a lovely warm welcome from the nurse on duty, I was then duly wheeled down to the prep room   and Dr Preiss asked how I was and where all the staff were so helpful, always had a smile and made you feel so relaxed.

Next thing I knew it was 14. 45 and the anaesthetist was talking me through the procedure in a warm and friendly reassuring way. Then I was wheeled into the operating theatre, next thing I woke up in recovery with   operation done. One of the nurses brought a lovely glass of water, and had a wee blether, and made my time there fly, wheeled up to the room with the Porter it was a laugh, these guys that work so hard have a great sense of humour, in the room I was met by a lovely smile from the nurse and she brought me a lovely sandwich and tea which really went down well.

I received my medication and monitored for the rest of the night. being an old boy! In the morning I was given my medication and had a wash and brushed my teeth. The lady came in with breakfast with all the options with a huge smile. Nurses came in to assess my leg movement said they were very happy with it. Was taken for a walk along the corridor and back with very helpful cheery nurses. Physio and movement were priorities along with your wellbeing. Then it was lunchtime.

Wow had time flew by, the lovely lady with lunch then off to the xray department where another very jovial porter weaved his way there and back. Next my bloods were taken by a very funny guy, but fantastic at his job. Then Dr Preiss came in had a wee look asked some questions with his usual nice manner and smile. He really cares for his patients. I would recommend him to anyone who needed surgery. Then the lovely nurse came in and said how would feel about going home. Oh yes that would be nice at that my good lady arrived and could not believe me getting home. My prescription came up from pharmacy and was wheeled down to the front door to my wife’s car with a lot of farewells to all the wonderful caring   staff in a wonderful caring hospital. Thank you one and all for the amazing treatment and care that you have shown me and countless thousands before and after me.

Dear Wulnic

Firstly, thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience and I’m so pleased it was such a positive one. Our staff work hard to deliver the highest quality of care and I’m pleased this has been evident throughout your hospital journey.

I hope you’re recovering well and once again thank you for your lovely feed back.

Dear Wulnic

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experiences in relation to your recent surgery.

You have had responses from your surgeon and the ward team, but I wanted to send a message of thanks to you on behalf of the anaesthetic and theatre team, whom you mention.

I will ensure your message reaches the team members involved. As others have said, we get a real boost when we receive such positive feedback. Your story really demonstrates the importance of a warm and reassuring manner to put people at ease during what must be an anxious time and it's great to read that you received this from everyone who came in contact with you.

I hope you are recovering well.

Martyn Hawkins, Consultant Anaesthetist
