"Car parking ~ IRH!"

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital

(as a relative),

Took my Mum for a regular clinic appt at IRH this morning & arrived at 8. 45. As usual...nowhere to park, not even a disabled space, not even a double yellow line available! My Mum is only able to walk a very short distance but I was able to drop her (on the pedestrian crossing, because folk were parked in the ‘drop off only’ spaces) at the door then go (after 3 circuits of the main car park) and park at the back of the overflow car park across the road. By the time I then arrived at the hospital she’d been seen so I had to leave her sitting outside in the cold while I made the 5” walk back to the car park to collect the car & return to pick her up. I am not the only person regularly inconvenienced / frustrated by this situation. When I worked at IRH 15-20 years ago staff were not allowed to leave their cars in the main car park all day, why is this not being dealt with? - it’s not fair on service users! I now work in another hospital where staff are not allowed to park immediately outside the main hospital building at all & can face disciplinary action, other hospitals have a 3 hour limit on parking. Staff should (as previously) be parking in the overflow car park(s).

Dear Roxy 31

Thank you for getting in touch.

I am sorry to read about the difficulties you and your Mum experienced in finding a car parking space at Inverclyde Royal Hospital

We are aware that there are parking issues at our hospitals and how frustrating and upsetting this is for our patients and visitors. I will forward your post to my colleagues in Facilities so that they can respond to your concerns in more detail.

Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience and additional stress caused to your Mum and you.

Kind Regards

Nicole

Update posted by Roxy31 (a relative)

Hi Nicole, I still await a response from Facilities staff so I presume there are no plans to improve the parking problems in the foreseeable future? This is a real shame for the hundreds of patients & visitors who are inconvenienced & frustrated on a daily basis, as the situation could be so easily improved (as it has been at hospitals in Ayrshire).

Dear Roxy 31

I appreciate the frustration you feel, and apologise for the difficulties you experienced obtaining a parking space at Inverclyde Royal Hospital for your Mum's appointment.

The hospital Facilities Management staff monitor usage, to prevent as far as practical, inappropriate use. There are however some specific difficulties at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, in that this site doesn’t have a formal legal parking management control system. This means that which means that there is no formal sanction (I.e. Unauthorized Parking Notices) which can be applied against patients and visitors who park where they shouldn’t. Despite this, there are a number of measures that we do take to make it clear what is, and isn’t appropriate use of these spaces, including regular monitoring, clear identification of the spaces, and challenging people who do park where they shouldn’t. In terms of staff, we regularly communicate to remind them not to abuse disabled bays, and they know that they shouldn’t and could be subject to action for doing so. We are currently working with Inverclyde Council to manage the disabled bays, however general parking continues to be a challenge for the reasons above.

Once again, I am sorry that you continue to have such difficulties, which is unacceptable, and that is why NHSGGC will continue to actively promote appropriate use.

Kind Regards

Cornelia Ferguson
