"I was told I would be taken home to see how I could cope. I felt like I was just dumped."

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

In November 2011 my leg gave way and I had a fall, breaking my knee-cap and tearing my tendon. I was taken by ambulance to Musgrove where I had tests and x-rays, my leg was put in plaster before having an operation the following day.

I was moved to Gould ward where I stayed for the next 2 weeks.

The ambulance crew staff at A&E and my time in Gould Ward was excellent. It was a different matter when I was brought home.

I was told I would be taken home to see how I could cope! I felt like I was just dumped. I had no food as no-one knew I was coming home. I was told I would have a care package and from that day to this, no one has been anywhere near me. I'm still on crutches and have limited flexibly and can’t use bath, shower, oven etc. I have been able to get seated ambulances to take me to and from hospital visits. I have arranged this myself. I have found the people who arrange this very helpful.

I am elderly, live alone and have type 2 Diabetes. My neighbour has been kind enough to help with shopping etc. I am having physiotherapy and have arranged transport to get there and home. There is a lot of talk via TV of people being sent home after hospitalisation and being looked after at home. This is a new initiative which seems to be about saving hospital beds being blocked. I think this is a bad idea as I can see people dying if left alone.

I am sorry you have had such a poor experience, your feedback has been shared with the nursing team and our therapy lead.

It would be helpful if you felt able to contact us so we can talk to you in more detail about how this happened to you.

We work hard to ensure discharge to home is planned and safe and clearly we did not get this right for you.

Please contact us on our PALs number is 01823 343536
