"Delay in getting back to hydrotherapy"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Physiotherapy

(as the patient),

Recovering well from hip replacement, gearing up for bilateral knee replacement within the next 12 weeks.

Having really benefited from hydrotherapy pre hip op, I'm keen to get back to it. Unfortunately, the earliest apptmt is 6 weeks away. If I am seen within the 12 week window for a bilateral knee replacement, I would potentially have a 6 week prep in the pool.  Because I have Systemic Sclerosis & lots of GI tract issues, I seldom have 'well' stretches of more than 2 weeks.  That would reduce the attendances I could have in the pool.

I had to cancel two previous assessment apptmts due to illness/surgery. Since I've been told that Wishaw Physio Dept does not operate a cancellation list, I can only guess at how the duration of my cancelled apptmts time was spent.

Dear Madge51,

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I understand this has not been an easy time for you recovering from your hip replacement and preparing for your upcoming knee surgeries.

Hydrotherapy is a valuable and highly sought after resource here at University Hospital Wishaw and we make every effort to ensure it is used to its fullest capacity. I'm sorry to read of your negative experience regarding our hydrotherapy service. So I can investigate this further and learn from your experience I would urge you to contact our Patient Affairs team on 01698 366558.

Apologies once more and again thank you for taking the time to get in touch.

Regards,

I will call the patient affairs team during opening hours tomorrow. In the meantime, you need to be aware that I received a letter through the post on Saturday morning. It stated that due to unforeseen circumstances, I would be seen by a different person at an earlier appointment. It also reminded me that missed appointments cost the NHS £136. If the two appointments I had to cancel, in good time, were not reallocated to someone else, did they cost the NHS a double fee?

It's a bit of a stretch to say I was satisfied with the feedback Yvonne. I'm glad that the issue of filling cancelled appointments has been taken on board. Since physio is the only area that I know of that doesn't operate a cancellation list, it's a step in the right direction . Whether it helps me remains to be seen.
