"Poor pre-operative assessment"

About: Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

The Royal Shrewsbury hospital day surgery treatment centre pre-operative assessment department is the worst I have ever had the unfortunate necessesity of having to use as a patient.

The reasons being;

Complete lack of communication - never call me back or email me when they promise to do so, leaving me in the unknown and risking my operation being cancelled and issues and needs being unresolved and questions always being left unanswered.

Disrespect for patient choice and decisions in their own care - The nurses I have had at this department in pre-operative assessment never ask what I need or if I have any questions I would like to ask or if I am even happy with the current pre-op arrangements. Particularly concerning is that of your pre-op nurses making all the decisions about me and my care for me without me, the old-fashioned paternalistic and patronising approach - no patient-centred care exists here. They keep taking all the control over my care away from me, even deciding everytime to not even see me face-to-face or arrange the necessary tests despite my multiple health problems and disability and many needs which they have not even responded to. They are completely ignoring me and I have desperatily made multiple attempts by both phone and email to get in contact with them which they have completely ignored and I only have one week to go before my actual operation, so am concerned it will be cancelled due to their negative behaviour towards me.

Lack of proper testing required - I have multiple chronic health conditions, take lots of strong medications including many strong painkillers, and am physically disabled and the pre-operative assessment nurses and the one anaesthetist gentleman in charge currently of pre-op assessments at Royal Shrewsbury hospital treatment centre do not do the recommended and needed investigations such as blood tests to check my kidney and liver function, etc. ECG to check my heart due to my congenital connective tissue condition that affects hearts, etc and unfortunately this has resulted in nearly very closely not getting my operation due to the anaesthetists not being happy to anaesthetise me without these tests being done at pre-op. I was only anaesthetised as the one was an older more experienced one but he was not happy due to the lack of tests done, if any, in pre-op and thought it was not a well conducted pre-op for someone like me with such a complex medical history and on multiple strong medications for a long time. I agree with him and hope this is fully looked into and that the tests are done this time and in future, not skipped over just to make life easier for your pre-op nurses as they have kept moving my pre-ops to not be face-to-face at all, despite only meant to be every other one like that and the rest where I come in for the proper tests so my operation does not get cancelled due to anaesthetists being unhappy with no tests performed on their already unwell patient.
