"Stroke and communication"

About: Astley Ainslie Hospital / Rehabilitation

(as a relative),

My husband suffered from a huge Stroke right over the communication centre of his brain. He has had significant aphasia expressive and receptive; speaking, reading, writing all affected.

Relying upon non-verbal communication was frustrating for both of us as we could not be specific enough with each other.

When he arrived at Astley Ainslie for rehab his reading ability had begun to improve, if information was conscise, otherwise we were very reliant upon guestures and non-verbal communication. He couldn’t point to correct images in a picture and correct words were few and far between.

2 months in and he can bring phrases and sentences together better, he can write the correct word from a picture. Today 20 words were written almost entirely independently in a 30 mins session. Whilst we still have a long journey ahead of us, the difference is immense!

I cannot express the gratitude to Anne, Hannah, Anne, Helen and the whole team for everything they have done to help support the two of us.

Dear Dani the Faerie

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback with us following your husband's stroke and his experiences with the staff at Astley Ainslie. I am so sorry to read of the impact his stroke has had on both of you and in particular the communication challenges that you have both faced.

I am really pleased to read how 2 months on your husband is able to bring phrases and sentences together. As you say, you have a long journey together but with the help and support from the staff, I am sure that your husband will continue to make good progress.

Thank you again for sharing your experiences with us and l have shared kind words with the team who I know will be delighted with your lovely feedback.

With best wishes to you and your husband.

Kind regards

Jeannette
