"The birth of my son."

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Maternity Care (Wards 21-24)

(as a parent/guardian),

After my son was born myself and my partner noticed that he couldn’t open one of his eyes properly and when he did his left eye looked completely different in size compared to his right eye. We mentioned this to the doctor completing his baby checks who told us, after finishing his checks that nothing was wrong. After our first visit from the community midwife the next day we were sent back to be seen by another doctor, in the neo natal unit. This doctor confirmed that we had been right about the size and shape of his eye and that he had no red eye reflex in his left eye, despite having passed his first checks.

This to me is both very upsetting and worrying that other babies may be being discharged after passing baby checks when they shouldn’t be, especially with such noticeable conditions like my sons.

Dear Ech2317

Thank you so much for taking the time to write on Care Opinion, I am sure it is not easy to find the time when you have a new baby to look after.

I was very concerned to read your story about your son's physical check with the Doctor after birth and this is certainly something that I would wish to investigate further. Please could I ask you to ring Lyn Clyde, Chief Midwife on 01698 366363 to discuss your concerns, apologies but I am out of the office tomorrow but we would be really keen to hear from you so that we can address this matter.

Kind Regards

Amanda
