"Understanding BPD Course Feedback"

About: Highly Specialist Services / Short Term Educational Programme (STEP)

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

This summary is a collation of all the feedback from participants who completed the Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder Course in January 2019.

What did you find helpful about the course?

- Examples of how to be mindful and understanding more about how to be positive.

- Meeting people with similar problems.

- The facilitators were fantastic at their job and knew a lot about emotional issues.

- I found it helpful being around others who have a similar diagnosis.

- Being able to express myself in a comfortable environment.

- The handouts and coping skills were useful.

- Meeting other likeminded people – knowing that I’m not alone.

- Learning skills to help me in certain situations .

- Knowing what I need to do to progress my recovery.

- The ‘stop’ card was very useful .

- Knowing that so many other people have similar experiences .

- Feeling able to share my own experiences without judgement.

- Learning techniques that might help me cope better in future .

- I found it really helpful meeting other people like me and being able to share common experiences

- I found the different techniques taught and information helpful and something I can practice and work on to find what works for me

- The coping mechanism provided effective short term solutions to help provide care while searching for long term therapy.

- Having guidance from someone with BPD

- The group aspect

- Laying out and reinforcing of ground rules

Did you find anything about the course or individual sessions unhelpful?

- Nothing, although the first session was particularly hard hearing about the symptoms of BPD – this was necessary though .

- Not all of the information is in the booklet.
- Occasional mistakes in the Powerpoint .  I didn’t find anything unhelpful

- I found the workbook hard to read due to too much text and the font

What suggestions do you have for improvements to the course?

- It needs to be longer, 4 sessions isn’t enough

- A workbook that relates to what we do each week

- More little cards to carry around

- I feel more group activities would be helpful, also a longer course period as I feel we have only just got started. With the depth of the diagnosis a longer period of time would be more adequate

- Maybe a longer course would be helpful

- Can’t think of any!

- More mindfulness examples

Hello,

It is really good to hear the feedback from people who have attended the Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder course at STEP. This course is run in partnership with a psychologist and Peer worker within Sheffield Health and Social Care.

We are pleased that there were so many examples of why people found the course helpful.

With regards to the feedback about finding anything about the course unhelpful I can offer some updates in response to these.

The booklets and the power point have both been reviewed and updated, taking into account feedback provided by previous course attendees.

In terms of the length of the course – this was set up as and continues to be to an introduction to exploring experiences of people who have a diagnosis of BPD and/or emotional sensitivity and to introduce some ideas for coping.
