"My father lost in a strange environment"

About: Raigmore Hospital / Neurology

(as a relative),

My father had a repeat MRI scan at Raigmore however the scanner was out of service and he was escorted to a mobile scanner, my mother was told to just wait for him at the original waiting room. My mother grew increasingly more worried when he failed to return from his scan and asked the reception staff to contact the staff at the MRI to be told he was let out of his MRI ages ago.

Now my father had his MRI due to having a brain tumour which affects his cognitive ability including his memory and processing of information and requires someone to be with him as he gets confused very easily. My mother was very upset as he had not returned to the waiting room and went to find him. My father had gotten lost in the hospital due to it being a strange environment and became very upset and felt very sore and sick following his scan and my mother eventually found him he was very distressed and also missing his glasses which he requires at all times.

This was a very upsetting time for both of my parents and I feel that the staff neglected to help my father by not escorting him back to the waiting room and leaving him as soon as his scan was finished.

Dear Cam3,

I am very sorry that your parents and in particular your father had such a poor experience whilst visiting Raigmore Hospital for an MRI scan.

The MRI team have looked into what happened on this occasion and are very sorry that your father got lost whilst finding his way back from the MRI van. The Radiology department lead has spoken with both radiology admin staff and MRI van radiographers.

Our admin team escort patients to and from the van to the MRI waiting room. The current arrangements have been reviewed to ensure the service is always made available to all patients that require an escort.

Please accept our sincere apologies for the breakdown of this arrangement in your fathers case, this is not the quality of service we would wish our patients to experience.
