I attended a radiology appointment for an ultrasound scan. When I checked in I was given a laminated piece of paper asking if I had “any of the following” including one sentence asking about cognitive impairment /memory loss. As a learning disability nurse if someone with a learning disability attended they would unlikely understand this or be able to read it. I didn’t see any evidence of signs / pictures throughout that part of the hospital either.
I was taken exactly on my appointment time which was great. The person who accompanied me to the room was not warm or any way caring at all, the two people in the room were presumably radiologists but they didn’t introduce themselves or their profession. Most patients, and I speak from myself on this occasion are anxious attending appointments and I felt vulnerable. I felt really uncomfortable with what seemed 3 uncompassionate members of staff.
As a lecturer in nursing I teach students to display values, compassion and professionalism which arguably should be a natural instinct in care professionals but I saw no evidence in my appointment.
The “Hello my name is...”campaign would be really useful in this department as would some empathy.
