"The birth of my youngest son"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Maternity care (Ward 31)

(as a service user),

I planned a home birth through the RAH in Paisley. Throughout the whole pregnancy my plans were respected, and discussed with me rather than being told what I should do. Due to a previous section, some doctors suggested an elective section which I did not want.

The midwives in the community midwife unit were amazing every step of the way. I didn't have any intervention until 42 weeks then agreed on daily monitoring. There was no pressure and in particular Linda was a great support. I couldn't fault anyone during this time though!

When I went for a routine scan at 42+3 they saw there was no fluid left and a consultant suggested a section again. I wanted to speak to Linda to get another opinion as I'm aware doctors have less experience of natural births. We all sat with the consultant and went through all my options and I felt respected and treated like an individual rather than a name on a chart.

Compared to my previous birth, where I was told what was happening and never had anything discussed, it was a positive experience.

I was upset to have to go through surgery again but I felt I had made an informed decision and allowed to take my time as there was no immediate risk to my baby.

I could go on and on about it, I really was so impressed about the way I was treated and I have so much respect for Linda. I am still struggling to come to terms with how I was treated during my eldest son's birth and this was in complete contrast and has helped me to come to terms with it.
