"colonoscopy at St Mary's Hospital Isle of Wight"

About: St Mary's Hospital (Newport)

(as the patient),

I felt unsafe and uncared for. Ten different people dealt with me, only two introduced themselves, some were pleasant but most were more interested in their colleagues and life outside work. I was left for more than an hour in a cold treatment room with a loo with no paper within reach, after the procedure I was twice offered a cup of tea (I had been fasting for 30 hours and no drink for 5 hours) by people who then disappeared! I could not reach the water I had brought with me as bag out of reach and no one to help. In the waiting room there was just one (occupied) toilet while the two for staff were clearly marked not for patient use.

The receptionists were eating and drinking at their desks and did not look up when patients (who had all been fasting) approached. I was not kept informed during the procedure itself, this did not go smoothly and I had an extended stay in the recovery room for observation where I was at times left alone. At one stage my pillows fell on the not very clean floor and a passing person picked it up after about 10 minutes and put it back under my head.

There was no one person responsible for my care and that would have helped a lot - some people were pleasant but general feeling of lack of care and interest.

Thank you for taking time to post this feedback, and I am sorry that your experience of your Colonoscopy was not a positive one. I have shared your comments with the Head of Nursing and Quality for the Unit and she would like the opportunity to discuss this with you in more detail, as this is not the standard of care that she or the Trust would expect patients to receive. It is difficult to address the issues raised on this forum, and I would urge you if you have not already done so to contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01983 534850 who will be able to put you in touch with someone senior to discuss these concerns with, to enable us to learn and take the appropriate actions.
