"Inadequate mental health care"

About: Somerset NHS Foundation Trust / Adult community mental health

(as a service user),

My psychiatrist here at Glanville House was in my view very unhelpful and not the slightest bit interested in my quite complex case, unlike my previous doctor. I had a lot of changes and complications with my medication and it was passed back to my GP to deal with. I ended up paying to see a private psychiatrist on occasions, as my GP was not comfortable dealing with psychiatric medication in my case.

Further more my GP tried to refer me back to the service for support and I was just passed off to the Talking Therapies team. I have now discovered that Talking Therpies cannot provide the intensity of therapy that I would need, in line with the NICE Guidance for my condition. A leading expert on my condition agrees that it's unlikely to be enough for me. So I was wrongly passed off to a service that was not appropriate.

When I asked if it would be possible for the Trust to refund a private consultation that I had to pay, I was completely ignored. It's wrong that someone on welfare benefits should be forced to fund their own treatment. The same member of staff who ignored me, also failed to act on a few other things that was agreed on.

I have now been given an appointment with a psychiatrist to review my medication, after two years of complaining and my concerns being ignored. To this day I am yet to receive a written apology from the Trust.

I think the whole thing is a disgrace. To treat another human being who is suffering with such little care and compassion is beyond me. The Trust even tried to use an excuse to say I didn't need psychiatrist support anymore. This was then changed to a different reason by a service manager, who said it was because of changes in the service. I feel that they tried to pull the wool over my eyes, but I suspected for a long time the Trust were hiding behind a pretense. I'm very aware of what goes on in this political service who cannot live up to their values.

We are really sorry to hear you do not feel the service you have received has met your needs, or your understanding, of what service we should have provided. If you would like to meet with one of our operational managers to discuss and go through the concerns you have raised we would be happy to facilitate this, please contact our office in Glanville house, 01278 720220, and ask for Tom Clifford and if he cannot take your call please leave a message and he will get back to you.

I have already met with a service manager who has not acted on some of the things that was discussed. I'm sorry but I have little faith that you really care and want to listen anymore. I would rather deal with PALS because they always get back to me. Unlike other members of staff who have not got back to me before when I have tried to communicate via email.

I sent an email to PALS over a week ago. I have had no response yet. I have asked PALS to forward the email to the person that it may concern. I'm not sure if they got it though, because sometimes my emails have gone into the SPAM folder.
