"Rude Neurologist"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / General medicine Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Neurology

(as the patient),

I have only just had the courage to write this. I have suffered really bad ill health, I believe due to the actions this neurologist. I have seen the Dr in question over a period of 2 years, only to be talked down to, not listened too, been verbally insulted and I have actually left the room in tears.

I was told that the pain I was receiving was due to Loose Living! ( I am in my early 50s and do not smoke or drink! ) and when I explained the terrible pain I was in, this Dr told me they believed that nerve pain was over rated. Believe me if I had a tazer gun on me that day I would have zapped them and asked if they still thought the pain was over rated! !

It seemed the Dr had a diagnosis already in mind, and would not listen to my symptoms, which most GPs and health professionals though was a painful condition call Trigeminal Neuralgia. I was told I had a head ache and most of my symptoms were in my mind! Hence why I went to Bristol to see a amazing Neuro surgeon. I had a MRI within weeks, then book in for a procedure for Trigeminal Neuralgia. It worked, pain free for 3 months, but unfortunately coming back. I am now back on the waiting list for the same procedure, and I am going a private hospital so I don't have to wait so long, as they understand that nerve pain is horrendous. The Dr in Royal Cornwall acted rude and arrogant, and I believe should be reprimanded for the way they treated their patients. Unfortunately I need to see a neurologist here in Cornwall for new symptoms, but I won't make appointment because I am too frightened I will see the same doctor. My GP suggested I go private at the cost of £250 each visit! ! I can't afford that, so will have to suffer, all because of this Doctor.

Dear Dobbie12

Firstly, please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you on here, my name is Michaela and I am Patient Experience Coordinator here at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust; part of my role is to read the feedback we receive from patients and share with the relevant staff. I am so sorry to read of your experience with a particular Doctor from our Neurology team. This is not how we would want any of our patients to feel and I can appreciate how upsetting and distressing this lack of compassion must have been for you.

I will of course be sharing your feedback with the Neurology team and ask that all staff reflect on your story and are reminded of our Trust values and behaviours especially when communicating with and treating our patients.

I am concerned reading your story and would really like for our team to look into this particular event for you; if you would be happy for us to do so or if there are any other concerns we can help to resolve for you, please contact our Patient and Family Experience (Complaints) team by leaving a message on 01872 252793 or email rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net (office hours Monday-Friday 9am - 4pm). A Case Worker will get back to you within 3 working days to discuss your concerns with you.

You mention that you need to see a Neurologist again in Cornwall for new symptoms and understandably you are frightened due to your previous experience and do not wish to make an appointment; I would like to reassure you that our team can also request that for any future appointments you are put under the care of an alternative Doctor from our Neurology team.

I am sorry again for your distressing experience and I hope that we will be able to look into this further for you

With kind regards

Michaela Brewer, Patient Experience Coordinator
