"My admission to hospital after an accident"

About: North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Emergency ambulance Royal Bolton Hospital / Accident and emergency Royal Bolton Hospital / General surgery Royal Bolton Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a service user),

I fell over a curb while I was out at a garden centre in Bolton. I knew my knee was broken or dislocated because  I was in agony, after a 45 minute wait for ambulance from Salford the crew came, examined my knee & said they didnt think it was broken or anything, just badly bruised etc, to which they informed me I would have to stand up! After I screamed in agony they gave me some pain relief & I still struggled to get up while he supported the bad leg.

All the way to A& E there was no general chit chat of any kind. On arrival they didn't know where to go & we ended up in a new resuscitation unit at side of A& E where I was passed over, no good luck! Goodbye! Nothing! . A nurse came & said I would have to move from trolley to wheelchair, I said I thought it was broken, it was agony & the nurse replied how else could they examine me if I didn't move over, they gave me some painkillers but the two of them didn't help much with my transfer. Off to X-ray, kneecap broke in half, needed operation!

Went to original A& E where the staff were amazing, helpful & friendly, got sent to plaster room where two lovely nurses put a leg brace on & made my husband  and I a cup of tea & sandwiches. Waited for a bed ended up on G4 which was excellent but i was kept awake all night by dementia patients. The lovely staff found me a side room so I could sleep nothing too much trouble. Had my operation two days later on my BROKEN kneecap, excellent care went the extra mile. got moved onto E4 all excellent staff. kind, friendly, helpful. I was discharged on Monday, the staff said I should stay a bit longer but I wanted to go home. after leaving E4 and being transferred to a waiting lounge everything went downhill. The receptionist in the waiting lounge was UN helpful & offhand to me & other patient's, I went home without pain relief because it wasn't signed off, my own medication was lost! I had to wait 25 minutes for a wheelchair  with a leg support on. I asked a porter could they move a stool next to my leg for support & they said ask a nurse!  I went home and the ward rang in the early hours to say my meds were ready, my husband got dressed drove to hospital and had to wait 45 mins because they had lost my paperwork and the morphine had to be signed off! Why say it was ready then? ? ? ? ? ? It seems once you are off the ward you are on your own, not anything to be proud of really, there is a lot to be improved on in the aftercare.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback on the different services you have come into contact with. It is reassuring that care on the wards was delivered to a high standard but there are clearly areas where you feel there could be improvements made. I will pass this on to relevant management so that we can look to address your areas of concern.
