"Occupational Therapists - Why so complicated?"

About: Nottingham / Social Services Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

(as a relative),

The social services team and the clinical occupational therapy teams need to get themselves sorted out quickly so that people are not affected by their lack of action.

Two weeks ago, the occupational therapists, who have been seeing my wife for some time, decided that the support my wife needed was the responsibility of the County social services team. A week ago, the County Social Services team accepted responsibility and rang to say someone would ring the following day but no one has.
I need a new toileting sling for my wife, all it takes it a call to the local Red Cross equipment providers who would then be able to deliver it to me. However, the occupational therapists and the social services team appear to be in a wrangling match about who should make this call, we are caught in the middle without access to the sling that we need. How difficult can it be? Why does it need to be so complicated and time consuming?

Along with the Head of Involvement (Paul Sanguinazzi), I am responsible for the Trusts two Involvement Centres, and our Volunteering and Befriending Service. I help to report all of the feedback we receive as a Trust to the Board.

Dear pemodel,

We're so sorry your story has not received a response until now, and also sorry that your experience of being transferred into the care of social services has been confusing and frustrating and has resulted in your wife being without the equipment she needs.

We have had (and continue to have) some trouble working out which occupational therapy (OT) service saw your wife.

Could I please ask you to help us locate the service so that we can make sure you receive a helpful response and ideally further support for your wife? (although I'm aware that some time has now passed and I hope that you and your wife have since received the support you need).

From what I've been able to find out, there are two services providing occupational therapy in your local area. We are responsible for one of those, the occupational therapists operating out of the Adult Community Integrated Care Team covering Newark and Sherwood: www.nottinghamshirehealthcare.nhs.uk/adult-community-services-integrated-care-team

Nottingham University Hospitals are responsible for the other, which is a service operating out of City Hospital on Hucknall Road (but may have seen your wife at home): www.nuh.nhs.uk/occupational-therapy/

I hope it will be possible for you to work out which of these services had been supporting your wife - perhaps by looking for a logo/organisation name on appointment letters? If you could provide us with any further information (in a response here, or by contacting me directly on the email address below), we will do our best to make sure your story reaches exactly the right team/person who can help you and your wife.

Thank you,

Amy
