"Myself and paramedics called"

About: South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as the patient),

I had to call an a ambulance to my house as I was in pain the first paramedic that came in a car and was very nice they gave me some pain relief and called an ambulance truck as I was unable to walk down two flights of stairs as in so much pain they gave me morphine in the muscle .

The crew then turned up with three crew. They got me some more pain relief to help me walk down the stairs after struggling with the first flight. I was made to go down on my bum as they kept saying only a few more stairs I told them again that I was in agony & I felt two of the paramedics were more interested in chatting outside of flats than helping. One crew member which helped down the stairs was saying if I wanted to stop and rest I could and I have no complaint about them. Or one of the other crew members in the car.

My complaint is about just one paramedic who said that they didn't think I was as in as much pain as I said I was which I find very offensive. This is not the first time I've complained about having to go down my stairs on my bum. It's degrading and embarrassing as this was the communal stairs in the block of flats. When they said they didn't think I was in as much pain, I did swear at him as he does not no how much pain I'm in. This crew member pointed his finger in my face and then said I was being very offensive. Who wouldn't?  being in pain and being told that your not in pain. I'm entitled to stick up for my self and I asked them to stop the ambulance as I did not want this crew member in the back and asked them to leave as I was not going to be spoken to like that.

You call for help because your in pain and I feel nobody has the right to tell you that your not in that much pain . You know how much pain your in. This is also the second time I've had to complain about having to go downstairs on my bottom and it's just so the paramedics don't have to do much. It's disgusting to think they don't think about how degrading this is. I wonder if I was in my 70s they would make me do this or is this just because I'm younger. I always thought a crew was sent to help not so they could have a chat and leave it to one member to get that patient down the stairs so they could pass the time of day with other staff members outside while you struggle down the stairs .

Thank you for taking the time to write in, I am very sorry for the poor experience that you had with our service and the delay in replying to you.

Would it be possible for you to send in details of when the incident occurred and the full address to which the ambulance was called so that I can arrange for this to be investigated fully and a response sent to you.

Please would you send your email to pet@secamb.nhs.uk, once again please accept my apologies for your poor experience, I do hope that you have now made a full recovery.

Regards

Graham Parrish
