"Back and leg pain/Microdiscectomy"

About: Thornbury Hospital (Sheffield)

(as the patient),

I started to get leg and back pain around September last year, having had sciatica before I booked myself in for some physio sessions as I had previous success following that route.

After a couple of sessions I felt a lot better and stopped going, after two weeks it was back but a lot worse, several sessions later including a couple of sessions of acupuncture with little relief, my therapist advised me to make an appointment with a back specialist. I contacted BUPA who gave me a local specialist to see, Dr Abhinay Kamat.

From my first consultation I have been treated with nothing but total respect along with a very understanding manner from Dr Kamat regarding my condition and what was required, a very comprehensive explanation of what was needed and how it would be done. My MRI scan was booked, I saw the Doctor for my results to be told and shown what he had diagnosed without the scan.

I had a trapped nerve due to a crushed disc in L5/S1 and needed a microdiscectomy. I was shown on the scan where the problem was and shown on a model what would happen.

My operation was booked very quickly, on my arrival at the Thornbury in Sheffield I was visited in my room by Dr Kamat who explained what would happen.

Everything went to plan and as I was assured it would, after my operation and a visit the following morning from physio I was allowed home 23 hours after the operation. The next couple of days were slow but after a week I felt comfortable enough to drive my car, (that's not a recommendation). I am on the large side so everyone is different.

From start to finish I cannot express how good my treatment was Dr Kamat and his team have given me my life back and I would recommend him 100%.
