"My 87 year old father was impressed"

My father was in Jersey ward for a couple of weeks recovering from a fractured hip.

He said the staff are all very friendly and helpful. The rotas change daily so he got to see a number of nurses and assistants and they were all very pleasant.

The only downside was having only one television and that being in the communal area. That wouldn't be so much of a problem except the staff encourage patients to go to their room at 8pm. Since my father hasn't had to get up for work for over 20 years he is more used to going to bed at 2am! There isn't much to do in his room, so after a few days he ignored the encouragement and stayed watching telly so was much happier and didn't receive any hassle.

Overall he was very pleased and would recommend the hospital.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your father’s experience on Jersey Ward – we are delighted that he found staff friendly and helpful and would recommend the hospital to others.

“Thank you, too, for your comments about the communal television on the ward in the patients’ lounge.

Having one communal television rather than in individual bays is part of our intentional approach to encourage people to get out of bed and to spend as much time as possible away from the bedside.

In addition to this arrangement, we do have televisions in side rooms for patients who need the use of a side room, as well as free wi-fi available that people can of course use on their own devices.

In terms of bed times, this should be according to the patient’s preference unless there is a specific clinical need, such as if the person has a high risk of developing pressure areas. I’m pleased that when your father chose to stay watching television he was supported to do so.

We do ask patients if they would like assistance to go to bed and we will just remind ward staff to make sure that in making that offer it’s clear there is a choice about going to bed this unless there is a specific clinical reason.

Thank you again for your feedback.

Best wishes

Jo Calrke
