I am a 23 year old student studying at the University of Nottingham and am normally well and healthy enough to play vigorous sports without breaking a sweat. So when one day I suddenly felt dizzy with breathlessness I got a fright and decided to make an urgent GP appointment. Fast forward 2 months, I've been in and out of Cripps Health Centre coming up to 9 times now with the same problem- difficulty breathing, with more and more symptoms cropping up ranging from earaches to a lump in the neck. Why? Because every time I see the GP they only have enough time to handle one symptom and treat only that one symptom rather than investigating further to understand the underlying cause of the symptoms and so week after week I make all these pointless appointments only to deal with one symptom and what more ineffectively. I have been patient with the GPs thus far but today's encounter was the last straw for me. As every time the GP only focusses on one symptom during my appointment, I decided to make a list of symptoms I have constantly been having for the past 2 months to help the GP with the diagnosis and to hint that I want to know what's wrong not just what to do. When the GP saw this the GP attempted to manage each and every one of my symptoms individually, constantly sighing and giving a condescending look as it would clearly take up too much time. To make matter worse, the GP handled the examination tools with some degree of force when examining my nose and ears for what reasons I do not know. Surely you can understand how I feel, for a 23 year old student who's normally healthy to have to visit the GP 9 times in 2 months, one has to question the standard of service currently provided.
Already having long waiting times, I at least expect to be treated with some degree of patience and empathy. I am an international student and have paid a lot of money to the IHS to receive healthcare from the NHS. I also cannot afford to go to a private GP as I am only a student. Furthermore, because GP surgeries are regionally assigned. I am at a dead end here. If anxiety isn't yet one of my long list of symptoms it soon will be. I came to the UK thinking that the healthcare system here will be much more organised but so far I've only been greatly disappointed.
