"Incontinence problem"

About: Shepton Mallet Community Hospital

(as a service user),

Aged 70 I started to leak urine occasionally and also have occasional lack of bowel control resulting in an accident. I saw a poster for the Continence Clinic in Shepton mallet and made an appointment. My GP had not mentioned this clinic to me. My appointment with Specialist Nurse Jill was extremely helpful: she was very understanding and warm, suggesting several practical steps I could take - reducing caffeine intake, putting golden linseed (flaxseed) on my cereal, having plenty of fluid and doing pelvic floor exercises. She explained exactly how to do these. She also told me how to get a Radar Key for disabled toilets and suggested sensible precautions like carrying spare pants and tissues/wipes,, using pads sometimes and finding out where toilets are when you are out and about.

I am doing all these things and my situation has improved. I was discharged after my follow-up appointment but have a phone number to call if I need any more help. I am very pleased indeed with this service.

Wow, thank you so much for leaving this feedback: that is really helpful to read (and I've learned a lot from your post!). I'm so glad that the service advice was helpful and I'm sure the Service Manager will also respond with her thanks and will pass this onto Jill and the team. I'm so glad you are pleased with the service and most of all that the advice has lead to your own situation improving. What a positive story: thank you for taking the time share it with us.

Kind regards,

LUCY
