"Sexist doctors questioning my husband taking..."

About: Archers Practice

During August my husband took our son to see the GP due to nappy rash and then a chest infection.

On both occasions he was questioned ‘where is mum?’.

We are concerned that this questioning was not small talk, but was required questioning as this occurred on two separate occasions by two different doctors.

I called the surgery on Friday 15th September to ask if there is an issue with my husband, my sons father, taking him to see the doctor following the questioning.

The receptionist seemed genuinely baffled and said there is no reason a parent cannot take their child on their own.

They looked at the medical records and confirmed one of the doctors had written in the notes ‘mum is at work’.

I asked for an explanation on this, as not once have I ever been asked ‘where is dad?’ when I take my children to see the nurse/GP, which wreaks of casual sexism to me, but also because I am concerned there is an issue with his father being with him which if so, needs to be addressed straight away.

One week later, I heard nothing back so I telephoned again on Friday 22nd September and spoke to reception, again leaving my name and number to speak to the practice manager directly about this.

I then received a phone call on 26th September from the receptionist, asking for further details about what I wanted to discuss. I again explained and was told I would receive a phone call from the practice manager (no date specified). I am appalled that a month after I raised the issue and after three conversations with the reception team the practice manager is still yet to speak with me, or even acknowledge that I am waiting to speak with them.

What is the issue with me being at work? Such comments undermine my husbands authority as an equal parent. I sincerely hope a father who has lost his wife is not immediately met with this questioning every time he goes to the GP.
