"Awful Care from A&E"

About: Leighton Hospital

I am in the early stages of pregnancy and was recently admitted to Leighton Hospital's A&E department via ambulance with severe abdominal pains. When I arrived I was using entonox provided by the paramedics and was left on a trolley at the side of a walkway while the paramedics checked me in. At this point I was in absolute agony but the paramedics had to take the entonox that I was using away to enable them to continue with their rounds. I was therefore left writhing in pain on the trolley without any pain relief while members of the public walked past staring at me which was incredibly humiliating. My partner asked several healthcare professionals who were passing by my trolley if they could help me as I was clearly in a lot of pain. Most wondered off saying that they would speak to someone but nothing ever materialised. By this time a good 15 minutes must have passed and I was now starting to scream/moan due to the pain. One nurse in particular was totally unhelpful as she said that she thought I needed something stronger than entonox but that she couldn't prescribe it so we had to wait for someone else to come but she didn't know when that would be and she wouldn't provide me with entonox in the meantime. By now I was vomiting from the severe pain in front of other patients and members of the public and was having to listen to comments from other patients asking why I was making such a noise. At the same time other nurses were sat around by me talking about how they had "stopped caring" about their work and were discussing what they had had for their lunch. The staffs' behaviour was disgusting and degrading. It took around 30 minutes for someone to get me some entonox to relieve the pain slightly and then a further 40 minutes before I received any morphine despite, again, both my partner and I making it clear on numerous occasions that during this time the pain was getting worse and the entonox was no longer strong enough. Again I was left, this time in a cubicle, moaning in agony for some appropriate pain reflief. I was left feeling totally terrified and humiliated by this experience and have spent every day since this happened in tears because I am so scared that this pain will occur again and I will be subjected to the same extremely poor care. I appreciate that the NHS is under extreme pressures and I understand that it is not the staffs' fault that there weren't sufficient beds/cubicles to accommodate me (and this is not what I am complaining about) but there was absolutely no excuse for the total lack of concern the staff showed me and for me to have spend such long periods of time in severe pain feeling terrified in a hospital where I should have felt safe and cared for. All I needed was some simple pain relief. Absolutely appalling care.
