"Mixed Feelings - Orthopaedic Day Surgery"

About: Woodend Hospital / Elective Orthopaedics

(as a service user),

I recently was a day patient for orthopaedic surgery at Woodend Hospital. Overall my experience was positive, my surgeon Mr Forrest was lovely and took time explaining the procedure and implications of the procedure and has since provided me with excellent care. Dr Stanbury my anaesthetist was also excellent as he was friendly and reassuring.

The theatre staff, orderlys and domestics on the ward were also great and kept me entertained and calm.

I was less satisfied with the nursing care on the ward. As someone with some experience in care I believe areas could have been improved. For example, my wound bled quite a bit when I tried to move a few hours after my operation and bled onto floor which was scary and quite painful. My family alerted the nursing staff but it took over 15 minutes for someone to assist me and my wound was still weeping during this time.

I was told at about 6 I would be discharged very shortly so I waited 45 minutes then buzzed to be told the nurses were doing handover so would be soon. I waited a further half hour to then be told they were still getting handover and it wouldn’t be long. As someone with prior knowledge I know a handover doesn’t take nearly as long as this and eventually I was discharged at 8pm. This felt like quite a significant delay for me bearing in mind I had only had 2 slices of toast in 24 hours and just wanted to get some food and home to sleep.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post on the care opinion website.

We are delighted to hear that overall your experience was positive especially from your surgeon Mr Forrest and the anaesthetist Dr Stanbury who had taken the time to explain the procedure and the implications in a friendly reassuring manner. I will pass on your kinds words to them.

Glad to hear that the theatre staff, orderlys and domestics kept you entertained and calm during your admission.

It is disappointing to read about the nursing care on the ward. It must have been very frightening and painful for you when you tried to move and seeing all that blood leaking from your wound. After your family had alerted the nursing about the bleeding 15 mins is not an acceptable time to wait. I am sorry that you had the wait for that length of time.

I would like to apologise for the length of time that it took from being told you where going home till your actual discharge. This was a significant delay and it is not acceptable for the nursing staff to say they are getting handover and having to wait even longer. You should have been offered a substantial meal in the evening of your discharge.

I will discuss all the points that you have raised in the care opinion with the Senior Charge Nurses at Woodend. If you would like to have further discussion please feel free to contact myself Andrew Baird Nurse Manager by going through the operator on 0345 456 6000.

Hope you are making a speedy recovery and again I would like to thank you for your valuable feedback and the points that you had raised.
