Finding your way

Finding your way

Oh dear a fantastic new facility for people with memory problems but where all the doors look exactly the same.

A man from the next room was sitting in my friends room which upset her greatly. The nurse explained he wandered. I am sure he did but nothing in the environment would help him find his way.

Could the corridors and doors not be painted different colours? There is a considerable body of evidence on dementia friendly design but no sign of this being in place - so disappointing for what should be a state of the art facility.

Leaving the ward I found it hard to retrace and find my way back. Way finding is not your strong skill Forth Valley. It maybe a small thing but its important.

Car parking was good though!

Dear Gretel 2

It is lovely to hear from you, and more importantly to hear your feedback about the new building, your are right it is a lovely facility but there are a few things that we need to do to make it that little bit easier for people using and accessing the facilities.

You mention that it would be useful is the bedroom doors were different colours, in each of the suites within the Bellfield Centre the bedrooms doors have been decorated in different colours, however we are working with Dementia Specialists to look at what we else we can do to make it better and more dementia friendly.

We are working with different staff and voluntary organisations, and have very recently, working in partnership with the Retired and Senior Volunteering Programme (RSVP) introduced Way-finding Volunteers. We are also in the process of bringing art work into the building over the coming weeks, and looking at how to improve the signage in and around the facility.

I really appreciate you taking the time to get in touch. It's very true what you say, it is the small things in life that make the biggest difference. Hopefully over the coming weeks when you come to visit again you will see some of the changes and many more.

Kindest regards

Avril Bruce
