My daughter was in need of help and support from the EPAS unit at Ayrshire Maternity Unit (AMU) Crosshouse. While in early pregnancy she started to bleed in the first weekend of January 2019, she was told to wait 2 weeks for her scan as nothing could be done over the weekend. She waited very anxiously for her appointed scan and had a further bleed on the weekend before the scan and called EPAS again with still no help other than to keep her appointment. She had miscarried
I know that an earlier scan would not have changed the outcome but what is the EPAS service for if it cannot help anyone in this position. My daughter was left to worry and with so many unanswered questions for a fortnight.
At this point I must say my daughter is an employee of NHS Ayrshire and Arran and was in the attendance at work system with pregnancy related issues, and being ignored and punished at the same time.
My wife went through something similar 13 years ago the AMU was recently open at the time. The waiting area was ill thought out with women in fear that they may miscarry were sat with women who were there to arrange a abortion.I raised concerns then but the system remains the same today. The EPAS needs to have a weekend service, pregnancies are for 9 months all day every day and a maternity unit needs to be the same not Monday to Friday.
