"My 2year old son who was staying overnight"

About: Royal Hospital for Sick Children (Yorkhill) / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as a service user),

Pre op and actual day of operation to get his tonsils and adenoids out went well. Staff all very friendly and professional at the Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow). Kept informed and made to feel at ease. From the surgeon to nurses to auxiliary staff. All very professional.

My only criticism would be that as a parent I was not told about meals and drinks. I feel that we should be told/given a leaflet that informs us as parents/carers of the formalities. I assumed that as we were staying overnight my son and I would be provided lunch, dinner, breakfast. He was but nothing was offered to the adults. I don’t expect a 3 course meal but I felt unable to leave my son on the ward (2yr old) to go to the shop to purchase something. I also feel for people who can not afford to as it can be expensive. I was lucky my partner was able to come in between dropping & collecting my daughter from school which enabled me to get some lunch. But I had to wait until 7pm for him to return to have dinner. Then again no breakfast in the morning.

This may not be an urgent matter but I feel that highlighting this at pre op would enable the parent/ career to come prepared ie pack lunch or snacks.

Dear Parent of a 2year old

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Care Opinion. I am sorry to hear that your young son had to come in for surgery but very pleased to hear that you felt both you and your son were well cared for by all members of the team during your pre-operative visits and the time that your son was in for his surgery. We will pass your kind comments on to the team and I know they will be delighted to receive these.

I am sorry that you were not given any advanced information regarding what facilities would be provided for you during your son's inpatient stay. Whilst we do not currently provide meals for parents and carers when they accompany their child in hospital we should ensure that we are providing adequate information regarding this. We are in the process of reviewing what information we provide prior to and on admission for patients, parents and carers. I will ensure that your comments are shared with colleagues who are involved in this in order that your feedback informs how we improve the content and timing of the information provided.

Please be assured that where parents and carers have particular financial and social pressures there is specific support and provision that is offered in these circumstances.

I hope that your son is recovering and doing well at home following his surgery.

Best wishes

Pam
