"Hospital, care home and end of life care"

About: Biggart Hospital / Care of the Elderly Medicine Queens Care Home University Hospital Ayr / Palliative Care

(as a relative),

This time last year I lost my mum.  When in and out of hospital I saw some very challenging scenarios that the staff must face every day.  It hurt to see this, to see other patients without the family member there spending time with their loved one.

I saw compassionate care and at times I saw it lacking.  I understand the pressures staff are under but there were times I did not see care.

This isn’t just

This isn’t just a woman with dementia, this is my mum

This isn’t just someone who cannot speak, she spoke three languages

This isn’t just someone who doesn’t understand you, she was a teacher

This isn’t just someone who can’t care for herself, she raised a family

This isn’t just someone who lives in a bed, she travelled the world

This isn’t just someone alone, her address books overflow

This isn’t just someone who needs your care, she cared for many

This isn’t just a woman who is dying, this is my mum

I am sorry to hear of the sad passing of your mum. Your words are so powerful and a strong reminder for us all that even as people age they have so much life and wisdom to share. I will share them with all staff at Biggart and Girvan Hospital. I would also like to offer to meet if you had any concerns about your mothers care at Biggart Hospital as I recognise how important it is to hear the real stories from our patients and their loved ones. I can be contacted through Biggart main office on 01292 665656

Dear gmcf

Thank you for sharing your experience on Care Opinion.

Firstly, please accept my condolences for the loss of your mum. As my colleague Lorraine has stated your words are very powerful and do indeed serve as a strong reminder that patients are people with individual needs, no matter their age or diagnosis.

I will share your message with all the staff on site however I would also like to ensure that the nursing staff on the ward your mum was cared in at UHA are informed personally.

If you would like to talk to me regarding your experience I am available to speak with you. If you would like to contact my pa, Tracy Scott, on: 01292 617126 | šor email: tracy.scott@aapct.scot.nhs.uk

Kind regards

John
