"Pain clinic"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Pain Management Service

(as a service user),

I attended the pain clinic at crosshouse recently I was seen by a member of staff who seems to think that all people are only after canibis oil.  This member of staff displayed terrible attitude towards me.

I’ll be putting a complaint in about this person who was discussing about how patients have been phoning up for the oil. is nothing to do with anyone letting me know how the staff are all on long term sickness.

I was analysed and told what the member of staff thought not what matters to me.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Unhappywoman,

I have been asked to post this on behalf of Dr Martin, Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Management,

"We aim to be understanding and empathetic for all out patients and I am sorry that on this occasion, you feel we fell short of this, and that you were unhappy with the attitude of the health care professional that you saw.

Regarding Cannabis Oil, there has been a lot of coverage of cannabis in the press recently, much of which suggests cannabis has a role in the management of persistent pain. Unfortunately, this is not an accurate view. The medical evidence in favour of cannabis for persistent pain is very weak. It is therefore extremely unlikely that the pain service will be able to recommend use of any cannabis based product for any of our patients unless the evidence is improves. This view was reinforced in a recent letter from Dr Catherine Calderwood, Chief Medical Officer for Scotland.

However, I would be keen to look into this for you so we can look at your situation specifically. If you would like me to do this, please contact me on Charles.Martin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk, with details such as your name, date of birth or CHI number and your address.

Kind regards,

Charles

Dr Charles Martin

Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Management,

University Hospital Crosshouse"

Update posted by Unhappywoman (a service user)

I never mentioned the oil at all it was the doctor because I didn’t like the tens machine they never offered any pain management to me what so ever then hits out with how they won’t prescribe cannibas oil. The thought never came into my head.

All I ask is for help for my all over pain not to get questioned about my eating disorder, have I got food in my cupboard then went on about oil. Sorry, but that made me angry and upset with the attitude of her.

They made me feel uncomfortable the two times I saw them, there’s no care plan in place for me to help cope with pain. They said they would write to my doctor to keep me under review which means basically I’m getting no help at all from the pain clinic. If I had walked in looking healthy and pain free it would’ve been a whole different attitude towards me.

Dear Unhappywoman,

I am so sorry that the Doctor's attitude made you angry and upset. I am sure this does not help you cope with the pain either.

I hope I can encourage you to contact Charles Martin, Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Management on Charles.Martin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk. Dr Martin may be able to help in some way.

Kind regards,

Eunice
