"Hysteroscopy"

About: King's Mill Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I have endured really heavy and painful periods for a few years and was recommended for a hysterectomy, but first had to get a hysteroscopy done to check that everything was ok inside first. I didn't understand this, if its getting removed, what does it matter whats in there?

I got a letter several weeks later for this procedure and it said you can experience pain and bleeding and to take pain relief an hour before. There was a doctor who performed this procedure and two nurses. Got a sheet to cover my lower body and legs in stirrups. All the lights were on and bright. I asked if the lights could be turned down and one of the nurses was a bit annoyed with me asking it seemed. Its ok for them, they see lots of nude and horrid things, but its different when you are the patient.

The lights were turned down and then I experienced the worse pain I have ever felt in my life. The doctor said he would have to put a needle inside to deaden the pain, which made me jump up with the pain. I was a crying mess, shaking with the pain. Even using gas, made no difference. The doctor wanted to stop several times, but I said I have to get this sorted, I need a hysterectomy, the pain and not being able to work was no good. I am not sure why I had so much pain, it was similar, but not as bad when I had an IUD fitted and pap smears performed.

I have read reviews from other women who felt no pain. I have had no children, so maybe women who have are a lot looser and their insides are more stretched dont feel anything? Maybe that is why I feel pain more? I had to wear a pad for a day as there was some bleeding after. The nurses were nice and I was taken to a room to 'recover' before my husband came and picked me up.
