"Cannot fault the staff"

About: Western General Hospital / Intensive Care Western General Hospital / Respiratory Medicine

(as the patient),

GP referred to ARAU taken there Dr was superb, then ward 20 then once better to ward 54 for severe asthma. Really cannot fault the staff at all. Very difficult admission for me despite many previous admissions for asthma. All staff were kind and caring, spending time to speak to me particularly when upset reliving ICU once back on the ward. Occasionally bank staff nurses would not be as understanding about asthma and not give you the time to get your words out due to breathlessness but would guess, getting it wrong then they get frustrated as got it wrong- meaning a small job takes a lot longer if they only listened.

Only slight negative and nothing to do with the care is the food. Having severe food allergies the menu does not say everything that is in each dish, you can write on the menu alternatives but never really told what alternatives there are so end up eating a lot of cheese sandwiches. Also there seems to be a shortage of milk on the wards.

Dear JustTUX

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this message about the care you received in the Assessment Unit, Ward 20 and 54. I have shared your post with all these teams have seen your post.

I am disappointed that any of our nursing staff did not allow you the time you required and I have shared your post with the Nurse Bank team. I am also disappointed that we did not ask the catering team to come and talk to you about your food allergies, which would be our normal process. Writing the content of all our dishes has been looked at previously, but it doesn't allow for occasional variation. If the catering team are aware of your specific needs and allergies, the food can be made to order.

Many thanks indeed for your very kind feedback. I hope you are feeling much better.

Best wishes

Catriona Rostron, Nurse Director, Western General Hospital
