"My daughter's end of life care"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Critical Care Unit (ICU/HDU) Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Respiratory Medicine (Wards 2, 6,7 10 & 16)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter attended Glasgow royal infirmary on a lot of occasions due to chest infections. Several months ago she was admitted and ended up on life support. As time went on she ended up with end of life care. I have experienced many a time of rude nurses but didn’t expect such this to happen at such a difficult time for myself and family. This includes high dependency and intensive care unit.

There is only one ward in this hospital that I praise and so did my daughter and that is ward 7/16 . Staff nurses and doctors there have always been excellent. Ward is very clean and as well as looking after patients they also care for the relatives. Palliative care team and nurses worked hard on ward 7/16 to get my daughter home, which was myself and daughters wishes.

We know the nhs is under strain but doesn’t give nurses the right to be rude. Can’t understand how one ward 7/16 can be so professional and other areas are not.

Dear Angel B

I am very saddened to read about you and your daughter’s experience at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and I would like to offer my sincere apologies. Our patients and their families deserve to be treated with dignity, respect and compassion and it is not acceptable for our staff to be rude especially at such a difficult time.

I am pleased that the Palliative Care Team and the Nurses on Ward 7/16 respected your daughter’s wishes and were able to arrange for her to go home.

I would like to reassure you that I have shared your post with my colleagues in Glasgow Royal Infirmary so that we can reflect and learn from your experience. I appreciate that this is a difficult time however if you would like to discuss this further you can contact me at Nicole.McInally@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

My thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time.

Take Care

Nicole
