"The Care of my mother"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Older adults mental health

(as a relative),

My mother has recently been a patient in ward 37 at the rah hospital, I understand this is a busy ward at all the patients have different needs.

My mum had a stroke last year in October witch left her with a left sided hemi meaning she needs mostly all care! I feel in this ward its such a task to take her to the toilet some times we can be waiting over 40 minutes for her then to have wet or soiled her pad! This never happened in the care home she was in before as they used there buzzer system well and got to her on time. I completely understand its a busy working ward but if 3 staff are needed to hoist my mother there is never any until 40 minutes later by this time she has done the toilet.

my daughter asked why the senior staff could not come out and help if they knew how the stuff were struggling to help the staff with patient care but that didn't go down very well as they then said they were doing notes or close obs! Also my mum never has her buzzer its always on the wall witch is a real issue for us as a family as its they only way she can say she needs assistance .

I just like to say this is not all staff some do find the help in time and are lovely. But my daughter left the ward in tears as a Heath care support worker she was shocked at the way her gran was left! I understand there's a lot more paper work now for nurses but this should not come before patient care.

Dear EDW

I am very concerned to read about your Mum’s experience in Ward 37 and I think it is important that we look into this for you, especially as your Mum is still in hospital.

We would always encourage patients, carers or family members to raise any issues they have at the time with the nurse in charge of the ward - this gives the staff on the ward the opportunity to address the issues immediately.

If you do not feel comfortable raising this directly with the nursing staff on the ward, it would be really helpful if you could get in touch with me with your Mum’s details. I can then talk to the service about your concerns and how they can be addressed as soon as possible. My email address is nicole.mcinally@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

Kind Regards

Nicole
