"Ward 103 Care"

I was admitted to 103 after being taken in my an ambulance due to severe glandular fever. I was very unwell and had been in hospital several time over the year due another life threatening condition. So I have experience a lot of different wards and care approaches, some of which I have been extremely let down and disrespected. As a result of that I was nervous for my family to leave me there and I prepared myself for some nurse to not be so caring.

But from start to finish the staff were so considerate and caring, always involving me in care and decisions, allowing me to have a voice and express myself rather than making me feel like a number or just someone with a virus. It was all the little things like chatting to me while they took my obs or when I buzzed they never made me feel like They were to busy to get me pain relief. They kept me in for a week and over that week it was apparent that I needed medical support, scans etc and I’m very thankful they didn’t just rush to get me out they made sure everything was appropriately investigated and treated. I am a student nurse and Iv had to take a break due to illness and the nurses were so lovely And encouraging that it’s given me that boost to keep going and not give up on my dream to become a nurse.

They modelled compassion and patient centred care beautifully. The charge nurse would come in every morning and just check and make sure I was being cared for or just ask me how I was, I find that very rare and have a lot of respect for her approach to leadership. I believe the atmosphere and unity amount the staff is influence largely by how the example those in charge set. I received high quality care and even though I was only there a short time I will never forget that they made me feel safe and valued even at my most vulnerable time. It restored my faith in good care and inspired me to be a part of the delivery of the high quality care we have the ability to give to everyone that comes through the hospital no matter what they are facing or how much pressure there is for beds and getting work load done etc.
