"Knee surgery"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Trauma and Orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I got to my appointment at day surgery for a knee op which was 7.30 a.m. I didn't get taken till 3pm - woke up in recovery, got told previously I was getting keyhole but discovered I had 12 staples in my knee. The nurses were all lovely but I had to wait several times on help to the toilet as ward never had wheelchairs or nothing else to transport me back and or to loo so nurse brought a flimsy white plastic chair.

Long story short, what I'm mostly concerned about is I waited from 10 till 2 for a physio to come see me - they did apologise saying they didn't know I was there waiting nearly 4 hours. Anyway they gave me a set of crutches and exercise sheet - I got home to realise the nurse had sent me home with 10x 2inch plasters to cover 12 staples instead of 7 inch plasters - lucky my neighbour was able to go chemist for me.

Also I went to look at my wound to discover my dressing was disgustingly filthy and only had blue material on my wound it had not been cleaned or anything since the surgery the previous day. I also discovered the exercise sheet I was given was for a different operation procedure that I underwent.

Thank you for taking the time to give us this important feedback. I am very sorry to hear about your experience within the Orthopaedics Department, in particular the serious issues you raise relating to your wound, plasters, communication, wheelchair availability and physiotherapy.

As a result of your feedback, I will be looking into the concerns that you have raised along with our nursing and physiotherapy teams. However I would be very grateful if you could also please contact our Patient Experience Team with more information on 0131 536 3370 or at feedback@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk. This will allow us to ensure that we thoroughly investigate your concerns.

Best wishes,

Chris
