"Care of Grandmother"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / General medicine

(as a carer),

Unfortunately this is my grandmother's second visit to C51 this year and it has been as disgusting and as disappointing to her quality of life as the first one. The lack of knowledge and empathy from what is suppose to be qualified staff and healthcare workers is appalling and the worst i have EVER seen working for the trust myself. Even after going through PALS on her first visit nothing is better the second time around.

My Grandmother is diabetic and prone to water infections, since being on this ward she has been asked by a bank care worker if she wears a pad and to just wet herself rather than help her to the toilet. Other times she has been having to cross her legs as she has been that desperate for the toilet and nobody has came when the buzzer is pressed. This is a lady who is struggling very bad with water infections and should NOT be having to hold her bladder. She also was not given her tea time meal at the weekend and if it wasn't for my cousin being there she would have not eaten altogether this is a lady who is dependent on insulin and should not be missing meals to be told oh she probably didn't order anything is NOT good enough. she has just come from the high dependency ward and doesn't know what day it is. it is your duty to find this knowledge out and make note of these things so they are not missed. Also i am not happy that when my grandmother spilled tea down herself the patient in the next bed had to go help clear her up whilst 2 staff nurses just sat at the desk watching. It is not up to service users who are poorly to be getting out of bed to help other services users. I do not understand what is wrong with this ward. I can guarantee they would not treat there own relatives in this way so why do they think it is ok to treat our relatives in this manner in a job role which is to care for others in their time of need, a job they have trained for and get paid for. I just hope once they reach their later life they are not treated as disgusting as what my grandmother has been treated or the world will be a very sad place.

Thank you for contacting us regarding your grandmother’s care and treatment on Ward C51 at QMC. I’m both sorry and disappointed to hear about the shortcomings in your grandmother’s care. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this with you, so I can listen to your concerns, and from there appropriate action taken. If you would like to discuss further, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly on 0115 924 9924 ext 64732. You can also speak to staff on the ward when you are visiting if it would be helpful to discuss your concerns face-to-face, which is always our preference.

Fay O’Callaghan, Ward Manager, C51
