"I learnt a lot about dignity"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Emergency Medicine Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Orthopaedics Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Plastic Surgery & Burns Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Respiratory Medicine (Breathing and Lung Problems)

(as the patient),

I was admitted in emergency due to extreme pain, profuse sweating and a degree of delirium. It turned out that I had a recurrence of pneumonia but I am also awaiting a double hip replacement and being treated for depression too.

I went from A&E to a General Ward to ITU to Respiratory Care and finally Plastic Surgery just prior to discharge.

In the delirium I was blissfully unaware of the havoc and worry I must have caused.

The surfacing was another matter and it was distressing on many levels to me. The staff who dealt with my messes did so with the utmost professionalism, calmness and above all sympathy.

I learnt a lot about dignity, perspective and even humour from the experience.

I cannot fairly single out a particular person. Each one from any of the departments that make up ARI did their bit in the best way possible.

I know that NHS is taken for granted but I personally thank all of you for being there when I most needed it.

Dear funnyguy1

Many thanks for sharing your experience.

Reading your post, it sounds like you had a very difficult and distressing time and so glad that the teams treated you with calmness and sympathy.

We aim to ensure person centred care is delivered and so pleased to hear that throughout your stay you experienced dignity and professionalism from all the staff.

Given the extent of your illness, I hope that you are recovering well and will certainly share your kind words and thanks with all the teams.

With best wishes

Fiona
