"Lack of information between hospital and patient."

About: Ninewells Hospital / Plastic Surgery & Burns Queen Margaret Hospital / Plastic Surgery & Burns Victoria Hospital / Dermatology Victoria Hospital / Haematology/Oncology Day Unit

(as the patient),

I am under Fife Health Board, but procedure was to be carried out within Tayside Health Board...Ninewells. Date and time sent out for procedure, time was for 7.30am. At pre assessment clinic I explained that I had to use public transport and it takes 1hour and 40min to get there. The charge nurse said that he would be advising that I should come  in the day before. At this meeting they were unaware of all the medication I take. They did not have my records. I suffer from CLL and skin cancer, one of the drugs is very complex and they had never heard of it.

Two days before procedure we still hadn't any word about whether I was to go day before. Contacted Ninewells, were told that there was no information on the screen regarding this. Eventually, I managed to speak with the Doctor from pre assessment clinic, said they would look into this and contact me, which they did, was told to come in day before.  My procedure was performed by plastic surgery team, who were very professional and caring. The ward staff very attentive and caring. What was a worrying time was made very stressful by the total lack of communication.

Dear Castke

I am sorry the arrangements for your admission to Ninewells Hospital were complicated by a lack of communication between clinical teams. I am also really sorry for the stress and anxiety you experienced as a result. I would like to fully understand how this occurred to prevent this happening to another patient.

I would therefore be pleased if you could contact me to discuss this further, please contact me on 01382 496627.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention and I look forward to discussing this with you.

Kind regards

Joanne Cowburgh
