"The continuity of care was unbelievable"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) University Hospital Wishaw / Radiology University Hospital Wishaw / X-rays and Scans

(as a relative),

My husband was admitted to Wishaw General  Ward 18 from his GP with abdominal pain. After a ultrasound they discovered an enlarged spleen it was decided that he would be released for an outpatient CT scan at a future date.

He was cared for  very well by a nurse named  Lesley in Ward 18 at this time.

He had a CT scan as an outpatient.

My husband took unwell again and I couldn’t watch him in pain any longer and dial NHS 24.

I was answered by a lovely lady on the line she kept me calm and asked lots of very important questions but suddenly asked what ward my husband had been admitted to four weeks earlier. I explained it was ward 18 and unbelievably the same nurse Lesley that had cared for him was on the line to me now she even remembered that they had diagnosed an enlarged spleen.
She was concerned enough to send an ambulance for my husband the ambulance turned up in minutes and my husband was re-admitted to ward 18.

My husband was diagnosed after a second CT scan with a Portal Vein Thrombosis and a Splenic Vein Thrombosis and an Esophageal Varicesa very rare condition in a normally healthy man.

My husband was transferred to ward 17 and spent 16 days in hospital after being in for a few days we had the pleasure of seeing the same Nurse Lesley in the ward caring for my husband yet again.

The continuity of care during this time has been unbelievable.

Dear angngeo

Thank you so much for sharing yours, and your husband’s, experience on Care Opinion. I am so sorry to learn of your husband’s diagnosis and appreciate that this will continue to be a worrying time for you both.

It was fantastic to read that ‘Lesley’ has been a constant throughout your husband’s care! Who would have thought the same Nurse would have managed your call to NHS 24 after caring for your husband on Ward 18 and then again on Ward 17. She sounds like an absolute shining example of the kind of staff we love having as part of our team here at NHS 24.

Should you care to provide me with some additional detail, then I would be able to pass your thanks directly to Lesley. I am sure she would be delighted to see you had gone ‘public’ in providing positive feedback. In any event, I will share your story more widely within NHS 24 so that our staff can be reminded of the hugely important role they have in providing excellent patient and family care.

I can be contacted on 0141 337 4582 or by email at patientaffairs@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

I am sure my colleagues within NHS Lanarkshire will also be pleased with your positive comments.

Thanks again for getting in touch. I wish both you and your husband well.

With kind regards

Shona

Dear angngeo,

Many thanks for taking the time to post your lovely comments. I am delighted to hear that your husbands experience and yours within our surgical wards was so positive. I will share your kind words with the staff in both ward 17 and 18 but especially to Lesley who I believe works both with NHS24 and our surgical wards. I am sure she will be very happy to know that she made a difference for you and your husband.

I hope your husband is continuing to recover well at home

Best Wishes

Maureen

Hi A

Thanks so much for speaking with me on the telephone today. I am glad we managed to make contact. Just to confirm that we have shared your amazing story with Lesley. From our discussion today, Lesley sounds like a huge credit to the NHS and we are lucky to have her working for us here at NHS 24.

Your story is indeed a shiny example of continuity of care.

Thanks again for getting in touch.

I wish you both well.

Regards

Shona
