"Uncaring attitude"

About: Borders Community Services / South Community Mental Health service

(as other),

It was awful. I feel that members of the community team I came into contact with didn’t care at all about me or some of their other patients.   I think the doctor I saw needs some more training and to actually try living with mental health problems for a day.   No understanding towards me, is rude and has poor people skills. A member of that team befriended some patients, contacting them at night, weekends, visiting on days off, then was as cold and uncaring as the rest when around other staff members.  When this was questioned we were told that mental health problems were to blame, clearly we imagine things being crazy and depressed. This is the professionals who we are supposed to be able to turn to in our darkest times, when we hit rock bottom. Well I did hit rock bottom and I turned to them and I felt that they couldn't have cared less. The way some members of this team talk to their patients as if they're stupid is not on.   I think there is an uncaring and unprofessional attitude.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on a service. I am disappointed that you feel you have had a poor experience with the community mental health team. As a manager of the service I would be keen to investigate your concerns and take action to ensure we learn from feedback from our service users. I would appreciate if you would contact me at irene.thomson@borders.scot.nhs.uk or telephone me on 01896 827152 I would be very happy to discuss your concerns and experience with you.

It was reported but brushed under the carpet and blamed the patients 'illnesses'.... so so upsetting. It was the worst experience I have had with the mental health service and because of this I can no longer trust any health professionals at all.
