"our whole maternity experience"

About: Burton Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I didnt know about this site at the time of my experience but if i did i would of written this sooner.

Our whole experience at Burton Hospital was mixed. after having a heamorrage at 30 weeks various tests were carried out. one of those being a GBS test. this shown positive however burton didnt inform us that i had this infection. when being invited to a consultant appointment at 37 weeks we were then told that i had GBS.  not a lot of information was given to us, we was just told that when my waters broke i was to come straight in.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and my waters break we go straight into Burton try every possible way of induction and fail misserably. eventually i was transferred to delivery suite and put on a drip. i had a lovely midwife and student midwife that looked after me very well until their shift change. that is when it all went wrong.

I was given a new midwife who seemed to spend most of their time with their head in my notes. It felt like they didn't care what me or my partner said, they knew best and we were to follow.

4 failed epidurals later and an early shift change i had a different midwife which basically gave me 30 min to give birth if not then i was going to have some assistance. turns out this was the case. rushed straight into theatre. successful spinal and my partner nearly missing the birth due to being forgotten about. when i finally gave birth they found that the chord had dropped below my baby's head and infact snapped. to be told by the dr who delivered our baby that if i had been left any longer then it would of been a different story we was very lucky.

transferred to the ward and had excellent care from the midwifes. our baby was under neonatel. they missunderstood paperwork and was convinced our baby had jaundice and again was adamant that our baby had jaundice and needed treatment. 1 hr after traumatising both myself and my baby they realised they were going off the wrong patients notes and infact was going of a 36 week gestation babys charts to my 39 week gestation baby.

there was lack of communication throughout the entire department. my partner felt useless and that his opinion was not worthy.

however now 3 years on we have a healthy child. i thank the dr and midwife and theatre team that safely delivered our baby. like they said we was very lucky

im now expecting our 2nd baby and will not be delivering at burton hospital.
